The painted monasteries of Bucovina (northern Moldavia, near the Ukrainian border) are unique in the world — medieval churches covered both inside and out with frescoes from the 15th–16th c., miraculously preserved thanks to the special technique of frescoes on dry walls. UNESCO 1993 (extended 2010).

⛪ The five main monasteries

1. Voroneț — "Sistine Chapel of the East"

The most famous (1488, founded by Stephen the Great). Famous for the Last Judgement fresco on the western exterior wall — 200 m² of apocalyptic scene, with the iconic Voroneț blue (secret composition, indestructible for 500 years, still vibrant).

2. Sucevița

1582–1585, last painted monastery in the series. Best preserved — exterior frescoes practically intact. Famous for "Ladder of Virtues" fresco on the northern wall — monks climbing the ladder of heaven, demons trying to pull them down.

3. Moldovița

1532, founded by Petru Rareș. "Siege of Constantinople 1453" fresco on the southern exterior wall — the only contemporary depiction of the fall of Byzantium.

4. Humor

1530, small monastery. Predominance of brick red and green. "Siege of Constantinople" fresco similar to Moldovița's.

5. Arbore

1502–1503, the village church of Arbore (not monastery). Exterior painting 1541. No tower — the only one in the series. Dominant green hue.

🚗 2-day tour
