Maramureș — UNESCO wooden churches

Maramureș is the region in northwestern Romania, on the Ukrainian border, keeper of Romania's most authentic rural culture. Wooden houses with carved gates, traditional costumes worn daily in remote villages, wooden churches from the 17th–18th c. without metal nails. UNESCO inscribed 8 wooden churches as World Heritage (1999).

⛪ The 8 UNESCO wooden churches

  • Bârsana — 56 m tower, world's tallest wooden church.
  • Budești-Josani — well-preserved 18th-c. interior frescoes.
  • Desești — 1770, naïve frescoes.
  • Ieud-Deal — oldest (1364), where the „Ieud Codex" was found — first document written in Romanian.
  • Plopiș — 1798.
  • Poienile Izei — realistic, frightening Hell frescoes.
  • Rogoz — 1663.
  • Șurdești — 54 m, one of the tallest wooden towers.

💀 Merry Cemetery of Săpânța

Unique in the world — the cemetery of Săpânța village (on the Ukrainian border), with over 800 wooden crosses painted in blue („Săpânța blue"), each with a portrait and a humorous-satirical poem about the life and death of the person. Started in 1935 by Stan Ioan Pătraș (continued by Dumitru Pop). 14 lei entry.

🏘️ Traditional villages

  • Breb — traditional village, chosen by Prince Charles as a second home (bought a country house here). Authentic guesthouses.
  • Vadu Izei, Bârsana, Botiza — typical villages with wooden houses, carved gates, traditional costumes.
  • Călinești-Caparu — carved gate masters (Maramureș gates are artistic monuments).

🌲 Natural attractions

  • Mocăniţa on Vaser — steam train (1932) climbing the Vaser valley, 21 km, 4 hours round trip. Europe's only steam railway still used for forestry.
  • Maramureș Mountains and Rodna National Park — hiking, rare fauna (lynxes, bears, wolves).
  • Blue Lake of Baia Sprie — former mine with turquoise-blue water.

🍽️ Maramureș cuisine

  • Sarmale — in pickled cabbage leaves, with pork meat, polenta.
  • Cheese pies — in the oven or on the griddle.
  • Smoked ribs — pork, locally marinated.
  • Horincă — Maramureș pálinka (plum or pear brandy, 50%).

🚗 How to get there

Baia Mare airport (BAY) with limited flights. More practical: flight to Cluj (CLJ) + 2h by car via Pasul Gutâi or flight to Suceava (SCV) + 3h by car. Guesthouses in Breb, Vadu Izei: 100–200 lei/night with breakfast.
