The Danube Delta (UNESCO 1991) is Europe's best-preserved and largest delta. 5800 km², 30% biosphere reserve, 70% under human pressure (fishing, tourism). Three main branches (Chilia, Sulina, Sfântu Gheorghe) through which the Danube empties into the Black Sea. 5500 species of flora and fauna, including 300 bird species — paradise for observers (Europe's largest colony of common pelicans).

🚤 How to visit

Starting point: Tulcea (largest town on the delta's edge, port). Three options:

  • Day boat tour (8h, 80–150 lei) — Tulcea → narrow canals → village of Mila 23 → return. Fisherman's lunch on the way.
  • 2–3 nights in a floating guesthouse — the best option. You wake up surrounded by reeds, water lilies, birds. Guesthouses: Lebăda, Pelican, Aida (200–400 lei/person/night with meals).
  • Adventure: kayak through the canals — for those wanting closest to nature. Organizers: Discover Danube Delta, Danube Delta Explorer.

🦩 What to see

  • Letea — unique tropical forest (Europe's northernmost with Mediterranean plants), rare species. UNESCO.
  • Sfântu Gheorghe — authentic fishing village at the Danube's southern mouth. 7 km sandy beaches, few tourists (hard to reach — only by boat from Tulcea, 4h). For those who want to escape the crowds.
  • Sulina — former important sea port (borders with British Empire, 19th c.). Today quiet, with multinational cemetery.
  • Mila 23 — Lipovan village (Old Believers Russians), preserves fishing tradition.
  • Canal Mila 35 — narrow, less touristy, unforgettable bird observations.

🐦 Birds to see

  • Common pelican — Europe's largest colony, 4000 pairs. Nest on floating reed islands.
  • Dalmatian pelican — rare, population of 500 pairs.
  • Cormorants, egrets, swans, geese, ducks — everywhere.
  • White-tailed eagle — summer resident.

🍴 Local cuisine

Specialties: fish borscht (fisherman's soup with three fish varieties), saramură de crap (carp grilled in brine), storceag (sturgeon), pike caviar, fish plachie. Local wine: Sarica Niculițel.

📅 When to go

  • April–May: spring, bird migration — peak for observations.
  • June–July: delta full of life, water lilies in bloom.
  • August–September: heat + mosquitoes. Less recommended.
  • October: autumn migration.
  • Winter: everything freezes, roads impassable.

💡 Practical

  • Tulcea: 280 km from Bucharest, 4h by car. Airport: Constanța (CND) 130 km.
  • Anti-mosquito: ESSENTIAL spray and nets. Delta mosquitoes are legendary.
  • Permits: included in the guesthouse fee. For kayak — special permit.
